Caligari

An original stage adaptation of the 1920 German Expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Adapted and reinvented from the 1920 silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the stage production follows Francis, his quixotic betrothal to beautiful Jane, the horrifying mystery of Dr. Caligari, and the subsequent murders that precede his path. In his fervor to learn and reveal the nature of the doctor and his somnambulist Cesare, Francis risks his life, his lover—and his mind.

CALIGARI cultivates stylized and expressionistic movement to capture the romanticism and extremes of the human experience, while exploring truthful and more naturalistic moments in connectivity and relationships.

Performed by HurLyBurly in 2010 and The Empty Space in 2018

Roadside

Charlie and Emily have been married for seven years. To sum it up, it has been a struggle. A month ago Emily found out she was pregnant. Charlie refused to have the child. After several heated arguments, he eventually convinced Emily to get an abortion. This ripped the final seams of their marriage, and five days ago Charlie left without saying a word.

In an attempt to retouch their spark and reconnect with each other, Emily has set up a night of fantasy for Charlie in a dingy motel on the outskirts of town. Emily will play the role of Layla, a high end escort who had been gifted to Charlie. She will commit to the part and do anything Charlie wants. He can be, or do, whatever he desires.

After spending five nights on the street, and being disgusted and tired of just about everything in his life, Charlie elects to play himself as if he left five years ago and has been homeless the entire time. Now, he’s be coming home.

But shortly after their game begins, Charlie can no longer stomach the charade and begins to torment Emily by testing the rules of their game and blending their real life issues into the made up storyline.

Through talk of tragedy, romance and the fatality of life, through their primal desires and reactions, they drink, fight, fuck, and stab themselves into the final confrontation of their actual circumstances and have to make the choice to stay together or commit to ending the marriage.
